Community based Child Development Programme is a major change in the programme from an institutional to the community. The programme selects 50 children in the community and develops programmes, which are relevant for all ages up to adolescence.

A separate programme has been  initiated for youth, mothers and fathers so that the quality of life of the whole family is improved. Hence this multi pronged project. The long-term objective of this  program is to make the child physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually a useful citizen of the community. The major programmes  ensures  that the child has a head-start even before being born, which means that prenatal care has to be effective. Anemia in mothers leads to low birth- weight babies.

Growth monitoring using the Road to health card and provision of 1500 extra calories through a midday meal are important programmes. This is provided through Day Care Centers.

The girl child is the special focus as she is at a disadvantage even before she is born due to son preference, dowry and most recently female feticide after sex determination  by ultrasongraphy. NIRPHAD has continued to develop programmes with an emphasis on the girl child and educating the community the importance of giving equal opportunities to the girl child and provide a platform for communities to discuss these issues .

Commuties are now realizing the importance of maintaining an equal ratio of men and women in a community, otherwise violence against women will increase when the sex ratio declines. Further, human rights of women will not only be violated but communities will have to seek brides in other villages. NIRPHAD won accolades at the World Health Congress for its poster on "Who determines the sex of the child?- the father". This enabled the staff to explain to the family elders that women should not be blamed if they cannot conceive a male child.
